Sustainable urban drainage

Urban drainageDrainage, ecology and recreation - together at Cambourne. An example of sustainable urban drainage at a new 5000 home development in Cambridgeshire

Mott MacDonald is at the forefront of sustainable urban drainage, with a successful track record of design and construction for highways, railways, housing, commercial and industrial developments.

Sustainable development is no longer a vague aspiration in the context of drainage solutions for the built environment. Very few major developments these days go ahead unless the drainage proposals are based on the use of sustainable (urban) drainage systems (SuDS). Under the UK Government's planning policy guidance note 25 (PPG25), developers and planning authorities are encouraged to include mitigating measures to control run-off, by utilising SuDS wherever possible.

Our specialist skills in this area include:
  • geological and hydrological analysis
  • flood risk assessment
  • outline/detailed design
  • environmental appraisal
  • numerical modelling for groundwater flow and contamination transport
  • integrated catchment management
We're experienced in liaising with environmental regulators (such as the Environment Agency in England and Wales) and local planning authorities. We add value by integrating our solutions into the overall landscape design of a development to maximise environmental benefits and reduce costs.

Our experienced team of professionals, including engineers, hydrologists, environmentalists and landscape architects, work as an integral part of many new development projects world-wide.
