Strategic environmental assessment

WorkshopWe've provided SA/SEA training seminars and workshops for local government, and other agencies throughout the UK

Protecting and enhancing the environment, both built and natural, are key aims of local and national government policy. Mott MacDonald has achieved recognition as a leader in preparing strategic environmental assessments (SEAs) and sustainability appraisals (SA) of the policies
and strategies of local government as well as national government and governmental agencies.

We offer the environmental planning services required to help local authorities, statutory agencies and other stakeholders to become fully familiar with the SA/SEA process. The variety of plan-based SAs and SEAs conducted by our sustainability specialists include local transport plans, supplementary planning documents and development plan documents for a vast range of clients. Mott MacDonald has also developed bespoke training aids and provided training workshops for officers from over 60 local authorities, with very positive feedback.

Such experience has identified the potential for us to implement the SA process at a project level. While this is not a legal obligation, we have found that our customers are increasingly seeking to incorporate sustainability into project design. By adapting the UK Department of Communities and Local Government method, we have completed SAs for a number of projects including a proposed link road for East Sussex County Council, and for the masterplanning stage of Maze-Long Kesh site in Northern Ireland.
